Ep. #18: Creating Your Self-Concept

Today, we’re talking about self-concept. Your self-concept is literally how you think about yourself and what is possible for you.
Which means you aren’t born with your self-concept; you develop it.
When I was in corporate, I had to develop the self-concept of an entrepreneur while I was still an employee.
I asked myself, what would I do if this meeting was with a client instead of my bosses? Because, it wasn’t a meeting that I was looking forward to. But if they were my clients, I’d be excited to meet with them and bring them coffee.
So I did -> I stopped on my way to work and brough my bosses coffee for our morning meeting.
When my self-concept shifted, I also realized I wasn’t beholden to every they said. Kim the employee would have panicked when the President of the company asked her if she’d started her own business.
But Kim The Entrepreneur didn’t panic at all. She calmly said, “yes, I have” and then continued eating. She didn’t freak out, or over explain anything. I was secure knowing that MY business was MY business.
And that all tied back to my self-concept. I was ALREADY an entrepreneur through and through. I didn’t wait to quit my job to feel like an entrepreneur.
This continues as you grow your business. You can develop the self-concept of a $100k entrepreneur right now, even if you’re working on signing your first few clients.
Or you can develop the self-concept of a $500k entrepreneur now. Because what got you to $100k wil knot get you to $500k or $1M.
And it begins with your self-concept.
So, sit down and ask yourself:
What am I growing/doing (your next goal)?
Who will I be when I achieve that?
How can I become that person now?
For example-
If you’ve made your first few thousand dollars in business and you’re scaling to $100k, what is the $100k version of you doing? This ISN’T a “fake it till you make it.” What are you actually doing and how are you running your business?
Do you have a better client process for them to complete work with you?
Do you have a legal contract in place?
Do you have a different payment system?
Do you carve out better work hours?
Do you set more boundaries?
Are you more firm/direct with clients?
Do you image you worry LESS?
And implement these things NOW. What will that look like for you to become that person now?
